This trip takes around an hour and a half non-stop. You can drive on 2 different routes, the time is about the same. One route is on highway number 13 at Bonaduz and the other is on a national road number 3 that is quite narrow with many twists and turns. It is a highway at the beginning, then follows a national road and then the highway that passes at 2284 m through the Julier pass.

You pass by Marmorera a particularly beautiful dam from where you can see Marmorera lake. You can see the ruins of Marmels castle. You can park your car at the beginning of the dam there is a small parking lot then you can visit on foot. You can cross the dam towards the mountain as the first foray. As you approach the cliff if you look up you will be able to see the ruins of Marmels Castle. The castle cannot be visited as it is inaccessible, located directly in the rock 100m above the dam. Somewhere in the rock at the bottom is a gate that is closed, and somehow it looks to me like there are stairs that one can climb up to that fortress. The fortress is very high on the rock if you are not careful it is almost impossible to notice it. The unusual thing is that you have no visible access way and you wonder what they did to build that fortress.

The population in the area speaks Romansh and the nearest village is called Marmorera, the village and area are attested from 1522 with a population of around 100 inhabitants, this population was ascertained in 1950 and now there are only approx. 10 inhabitants. The village disappeared due to the compromise made, a dam was built to supply electricity to the country, the money received to be used locally. In the course of the dives, abandoned walls and houses now under water were observed.

Other short trips can be made in the valley behind the dam or one can walk along the dam and admire the beautiful scenery. I did this hike in the fall of 2022 in October and the weather was very nice.

When you leave Marmorera, you can also admire the opposite end of the lake from the dam, where you can admire some very beautiful landscapes.

Then going further, you immediately reach the Bivio area where there is a very beautiful natural park, Openair Bivio. From here the serpentines start and climb to the Julier pass.

Arriving in the pass, you can make a stop at the Juliertheater, where the Origen cultural festival is held. If in the parking lot you will see several cars without an owner, this means that those drivers came to fish as there is a lake nearby, Lej in Romansh. The lake is called Julia (Güglia). The cultural festival is held in a sort of metal cylindrical tower hotel with some rooms with large windows on different levels. The lake is nearby and can be reached on foot through the back of the hotel. The hotel was not inhabited, in October being closed for the season. The small restaurant next door was also closed.

Then, continuing the road, it descends steeply to St. Moritz, passing Silvaplana, a small town that we will leave on the right just by reaching St. Moritz. Arriving in St. Moritz, you can park your car at the Signal Bahn Parking lot.
This car park is decent, has enough spaces. Then to get out, we take the elevator. On the upper floor is also the train station and one of the exits is through a door to a small tower with a panoramic view from where you can admire the view of the lake and from where you can go down a staircase to a road on the edge of the lake.

From here you can go hiking on the edge of the lake, you can go around the entire lake on foot. If you start to the left and have the lake on your right after 50 minutes you will reach a hotel that also has a restaurant with a very nice viewpoint from where you can take great photos. You can also dare to go up in the city to the city’s hotels, which are very nice. You can see the cable car and some of the ski slopes. It is a cool area and it is good to have a hat and a jacket with you.
